Card Skimming
There has been recent coverage in the media regarding a large number of “skimming” devices that have been placed inside gasoline pumps along the Wasatch Front.
“Skimming” devices work by using small, portable devices that can be worn or placed directly over or inside a regular card reader. When a victim places their card in the device, enough information to make a counterfeit card with an accurate pin is taken and a counterfeit card is easily made. The card is then used in locations all over the world without the victim’s knowledge until the transactions clear their account.
Deseret First Credit Union is aware of this recent scam and is taking proactive measures to prevent the unauthorized use of any counterfeit cards.
As a reminder, it is safest to use your ATM/Debit card for transactions. If an unauthorized debit or transaction clears your account, VISA does not hold the cardholders responsible for fraud charges as long as the fraud is reported in a timely manner which isn’t always the case when using cash or checks.
It can be difficult to detect that a skimming device has been place in or on a legitimate card reader. Here are some “rules to live by” for ATM safety.
- Protect your pin number while entering it.
- Use ATMs that are in well-lit areas that are visible to the public.
- Beware of individuals using their cell phone near you or individuals that are looking over your shoulder.
- Monitor your accounts closely on a regular basis. If you see any unauthorized transactions clear your account, please contact Deseret First Credit Union immediately.
